Hey Mamas and Dadas, its me again! I know its been forever since the last time you heard from me but I have some news I know you are going to like. As we all know Potty training can be quite stressful when raising a toddler. It brings out the impatience out of the most patient person you know. There are highs and lows of milestones and this milestone, for me, is a definite mixture of the two. I faced challenges and unlocked achievements.

I started potty training naomi at 16 months old or at least I tried. One of my biggest challenge was to get her to use her potty aka chimmy. Here are some must dos to get your child started.

Potty taining to do list

  • Choosing the right potty

  • Start with a pull-ups of your choice (I however, believe its a waste of money to get them so I use regular diapers at night)

  • Find a designated area to place the potty (if you're not using a booster)

  • Help them get use to sitting on it

  • Help them understand the feeling of wanting to go

  • Teach them the concept of peeing and pooping

  • Award them for using the potty

  • Be consistent, make it a routine

In Choosing a potty for Naomi, she had what we called a regular chimmy. However, she would it use for everything else except what it is meant for. We then realized that and bought a booster for her. Once she became acquainted to sitting on the toilet it was game over and here is where the consistency comes in. You will then need to make a routine for for potty time preferably around the time they normally go. It may become frustrating at times but don't stop putting them on the potty. Help them to identify the urge of wanting to urinate and defication. Teach them to differentiate between peeing and pooping and once they get the concept of doing that it will be much easier. Always remember to reward them for using the potty with stickers, candy or even an high five. This will help them to be motivated to go potty. You can always make potty time a fun time, like making a chart for your rewards or simply allowing the to use their smart device 😉.

Milestones are a big deal of our children's development and this indeed will be an achievement unlocked. Good luck Mamas and Dadas.

Until next time I'm signing out!
