Caring For A Child With Eczema

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

Eczema is a condition wherein patches of the skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough. Some types can also cause blisters. Naomi had a very bad flare up of Eczema when she was about two months old. It started out as little red rashes on her cheeks when I went to the pediatrician they first told me it was baby pimples and it was nothing to worry about. It became worst when those rashes became very white spots on her face. Her skin became very rough and dry, I thought it was because of the weather being cold and dry so I started to moisturize her body with oil like every five minutes. Her scalp became flakey with the rashes and I was just so frustrate and confused. When I brought her back to pediatrician he told me it was the soap drying out her skin and that I should use soap only twice a week for bath time otherwise use water only. Up to this point their was no mentioned of Eczema so we still weren’t sure of what was happening to her skin. So my husband and I took the initiative to research on her symptoms and realized that the symptoms were of Eczema therefore, we bought Eucerine Eczema flare up creme and Cetaphil hair and body wash. At this point, it worked to soothe her skin from itching and controlled the flare up but it was a bit too strong for her skin. She became even more spotted, this time with white huge patches on her neck, legs, arms, and other parts of her body.

Naomi’s skin has made a great come back looking back at her 2-4 months old photos. When we got to Jamaica my husband and I registered her at The KIDZ KLINIK when I met Dr. Royes. He is the Jamaican “House” and I give God thanks for doctors like him. When we first visited him he instantly knew that she has Eczema and recommended the glorious Hydrocortisone Creme and Emulsifying B.P Ointment. These two combinations have worked wonders to Naomi’s skin. Her creases that we completely whitened out are now back to normal, her chest and neck are smooth and clear of rashes and other parts of her body are clear as well. who could it be but God, Dr. Royes told us that the spots would go away but it would take a while but the spots are completely gone and her skin back to normal.

How to care for Eczema

  • taking lukewarm baths

  • applying moisturizer within 3 minutes of bathing to “lock in” moisture

  • moisturizing every day

  • wearing cotton and soft fabrics

  • avoiding rough, scratchy fibers and tight fitting clothing

  • using a humidifier in dry or cold weather

  • using a mild soap or a non-soap cleanser when washing

  • taking extra precautions to prevent eczema flares in winter

  • air drying or gently patting the skin dry with a towel, rather than rubbing the skin dry after bathing or taking a shower

  • where possible, avoiding rapid changes of temperature and activities that cause sweating

Now we are learning and avoiding triggers of her Eczema such as milk, peanuts, eggs, citrus food and drinks.
